Belvedere Infant School

Subject Leader for Art and Design and DT is Miss Thandi.

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Our essential learning objectives for Art and Design are to enable children:

  • To develop ideas
  • To master techniques
  • To take inspiration from the great artists and designers

We place great importance on children’s understanding of art. Children learn about its place in history, about how it features in our and other people’s cultures and they learn how to produce artwork using different skills and media.

During weekly art sessions, children have the opportunity to observe, discuss and create, there is also time for them to evaluate their own and other pupils’ work.  Lessons are structured around the children’s half-termly IPC topic and reflect and build upon what they are learning in their other lessons. Children create individually, in partners and collaboratively and they sculpt, collage, draw – using a wide range of media – or paint with. Our children show great enthusiasm during art lessons, this is evident in the fantastic artwork that they produce, much of which goes on display in school.

Belvedere Infant School Art Gallery

As we have some brilliant artists at Belvedere Infant School, we will soon like to share the joy of Art with our wonderful community. Our most recent challenge to the children has been to create a piece of artwork linked to their Class name animal using any media. It can be the animal or their habitiat.  We can’t wait to shortly post our masterpieces with you all!

If you would like to submit any artwork you complete at home that is linked to this then please email a picture of your piece to rthandi@belvedere-inf.bexley.sch.uk with your full name and year group. Miss Thandi will be then be posting your art work submissions to the new virtual gallery that is coming soon.  The art work will be posted here on the school website with children’s first names only. If you would like the artwork to be anonymous however, then please mention this in the email. This will be an on-going project as we would love to keep filling our virtual gallery with your inspired Art. We can’t wait to see your spectacular creations and hope to see you get involved!

Design and Technology
Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous, and practical subject. It is about providing opportunities for children to showcase their creativity and imagination to design and make innovative products that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and other’s needs. It also helps to provide contexts for children to explore broader issues such as environmental impact and sustainability. The children acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

Design Technology

Design Technology at Belvedere Junior School develops every child’s ability and knowledge in design structures, mechanisms, electrical control and cooking. Children use their enquiry skills to think about important issues to invent solutions.  Within these enquiries, children gain skills through problem solving, planning, making and evaluating their own work allows our children to work independently and as a collaborator. Children are taught that small failures are a key success tool for pinpointing areas for development, therefore ensuring future success.

Art

We celebrate the artistic creativity of every child. With access to a range of high quality craft materials, each child has the opportunity to express themselves in a fun and imaginative way. As well as experimenting with a variety of mediums and learning new creative skills, all pupils have the opportunity to make creative decisions and be inventive in the art work they produce.  Research into the history of art and famous artists inspire every child to learn different techniques and apply them to their own masterpieces. Art at Belvedere Junior School instils a sense of pride in our children and boosts their self-confidence.
